RCA RTRU5027 – Design and FeaturesThe 50-inch RCA has the look you’d expect from a cheap 4K TV. The case is a black plastic with bezels that are a bit wide at 11mm around the sides and 25mm along the bottom. The feet are crescent-shaped plastic that toe-out in the front. Around the right-hand side is where you can find buttons for power, channel, and volume toggle, and all connections are around the left side. There are three HDMI (one with ARC), one optical, one Ethernet, a stereo RCA with composite video, and a coax connection for cable or a HDTV antenna, and a headphone jack all down-facing. They’re a bit difficult to get to and read, as the port labeling is also down facing. On the side are two USB 2.0 ports that are easily accessible. More Expert Tech RoundupsThe best thing about this TV is that it uses the Roku interface for its UI. Setup is easy and only takes a few minutes. You’ll need to sign up for a Roku account if you don’t already have one, but it doesn’t cost anything. I really like the Roku guide and find navigating it intuitive. The RCA comes with the major streaming apps already installed and prominently displayed towards the top of the menu, right underneath the list of your wired components. The included Roku remote is small and light, fitting comfortably in the hand. There are four dedicated buttons on the bottom for Netflix, Hulu, Fandango Now, and Pandora for quick access. It is lacking voice control that some Roku remotes provide, but you can download the Roku remote app for that functionality if you need it. Voice activation works pretty well, although it doesn’t recognize renamed inputs. The remote is IR, so be sure to keep an open path to the bottom right of the television where the sensor is. RCA RTRU5027 – Testing and GamingTesting was done with a Photo Research PR-650 spectroradiometer, a Konica Minolta LS-100 luminance meter, and CalMAN 2018 calibration software. SDR video patterns were generated by an AVFoundry VideoForge and HDR patterns were from Diversified Video Solutions’ UltraHD/HDR-10 Test Pattern Suite. Measurements were done with default display settings, except for any extra processing (such as sharpness enhancement or dynamic contrast) turned off as they can give skewed results.I measured the color temperature of each picture mode to find the closest to 6500 Kelvin (the color temperature of daylight and the target for displays). It’s a general rule that if a mode is named ‘movie’ or ‘cinema’ it will be the closest to accurate on a TV and that is true with the RCA. Movie mode defaults to the warm color temperature setting that measures 6278K. That means white shades will have a red coloration (lower numbers means more red, higher means more blue). Normal is up around 9000 and cool is well over 10,000. I stuck with the warm setting in movie mode. For HDR I used the Dark HDR setting as the numbers were the same as movie mode. (HDR image settings are only accessible when the content is HDR.) When analyzing the measurements for a display, the term DeltaE is used to show the perceptible difference between two colors – in this case the target and the measured value. Below 3.0 is the acceptable threshold where you can see a difference but it isn’t too far off. 2.0 and below is excellent and 1.0 is difficult to see with the human eye. The primary (red, green, blue) and secondary (cyan, magenta, yellow) of the RCA are pretty good. All fall below 3.0 with green, cyan, and yellow hovering around the 1.0 mark. Whites and grays on the other hand are wildly inaccurate ranging from 3.1 for dark gray up to 4.9 for light gray.
The low peak brightness of 172 nits does not bode well for HDR content..
The RTRU5027 falls short on luminance measurements as well. In movie mode I was only able to get 172 cd/m2 (also called nits) out of the display. (Changing to the dynamic mode with brightness turned all the way up I measured 235 nits, but the overall picture looked terrible.) Paired with a black level of 0.07, the RCA has a contrast ratio of 2457:1. The low peak brightness of 172 nits does not bode well for HDR content, as the number should be at least 2-3 times that to get some satisfying highlights. The mediocre black level means that black looks more like gray. The RCA doesn’t have local dimming, so a bright point on the screen will likely cause darker sections to have an elevated black level.I turned on the Xbox One X to see how these measurements translated to some actual gameplay. Running through the Siberian caves of Rise of the Tomb Raider looking for Kitezh was mildly disappointing. Because of the higher black level and lack of local dimming, I was missing some detail in the dark parts of the screen. If there were any shadows cast across Lara’s face it lost all definition. The image itself was also a little noisy (it looks extra grainy). I found this in SDR games as well. Both the cutscenes and gameplay of Warhammer: Vermintide 2 had extra noise, especially in areas of mid-brightness. Colors looked good, but I couldn’t get over the issues with the grayscale and detail. The same shadow detail and noise issues that plagued my gaming session were apparent with movies as well. The backdrop of space in The Last Jedi had a slight gray tinge to it, and ships flying by were missing the sharp definition I’m used to at 4K. The cityscapes of Blade Runner 2049 looked a bit drab as the bright highlights didn’t pop like HDR should. Purchasing GuideRca 50 Inch Tv DlpThe RCA RTRU5027 has an MSRP of $499.99, but can be found on Amazon for a bit over $400, or at Walmart for just $330.Verdict
Sharp tv software update aquos. The RCA RTRU5027 is a get-what-you-pay-for situation. Mouse recorder download. The Roku interface is great and you'd be hard pressed to find a television that could beat its imperceptible input lag for gaming. But its poor light output and image clarity drastically affect the quality of gaming in 4K and HDR. If you’re looking for a enjoyable 4K HDR experience, I’d recommend paying a little more for a Vizio or TCL.
